Work Measurement

WORK MEASUREMENT

Work measurement is an important part of any business. People associate work measurement with manufacturing or production, but it many other sectors including warehouse, distribution centres, retail, call centres, etc, require Standard Minute Values to understand how long it will take to perform a task by a qualified worker working at a defined level of performance. It is not uncommon for businesses to have their SMV’s reviewed on a regular basis due to changes in standard operating procedures and or seasonal values. Such changes can change KPI’s otherwise known as key performance indicators. Once work measurement plans are underway and you have established SMV’s you can then identify the following;

MANAGE STAFFING LEVELS:

You can identify the optimal level and mix of staff required to deliver output as cost-effectively as possible.

PRODUCTION PLANNING:

What to produce, when to produce, how much is it to produce, etc.

PRODUCTION CONTROL:

This looks at utilizing different types of control techniques to achieve optimum performances such as ensuring a smooth flow of production processes and to monitor the wastage of resources.

REALISTIC COSTING:

The cost of producing goods or service, including the cost of all resources used and cost of not employing those resources in alternative uses.

COST REDUCTION:

Is a process used by companies to reduce their costs and increase their profits.

COST CONTROL:

Is the practice of identifying and reducing business expenses to increase profits and it starts with the budgeting process?

DELIVERY DATE OF GOODS:

Is the process of transporting goods from a source location to a predefined destination?

COMPARING ALTERNATIVE METHODS:

Having created an SMV for a process you can then re-engineer the process and then retime it. Hopefully, the re-engineered process has improved the process and reduced the SMV. From this, you can then identify which process is more cost effective.

INCENTIVE SCHEMES:

Often used to reduce turnover, boost morale and loyalty, improve employee wellness, increase retention, and drive employee performance.

IDENTIFYING UNDER PERFORMING EMPLOYEES:

Unsatisfactory work performance that is a failure to perform the duties of the position or to perform them to the standard required, non-compliance with workplace policies, rules or procedures.
